Florida neighborhood will care for children

This year has seemed like a constant stream of bad news for many across the country, so it is always a blessing to learn something objectively good is happening and have the opportunity to share in its joy. Just such an opportunity for gratefulness is happening in West Melbourne, Florida. Construction has begun on a first-of-its-kind neighborhood that will serve the needs of children who have been the victims of abuse and neglect. The project is hoping to be operational in the Spring of 2017.

The neighborhood will offer a place to call home for children whose parents have been deemed unfit to care for them, either through incapacitation or because of substance abuse or incarceration. However, this development is about more than just giving children a place to stay — it offers a true opportunity to be a part of a family.

The neighborhood will include several homes, each inhabited by foster parents who will be available to take care of a child, once a judge has awarded the organization legal guardianship.

Although the organization has already been caring for children in need for some time, it will soon be the first subdivision in the world devoted to assuming legal responsibility for children. The current plans include seven homes, each capable of providing for five children.

With so many harsh things happening around us, it is good to take a moment, especially in the holiday season, to be grateful for the good things that we have, and consider how we might share our blessings with those who have experienced hard circumstances. If you have any further questions about guardianship and how it might apply to your family, an experienced attorney can help you understand the full scope of the field, and assist you as you take the next steps in your journey.
